Due to the rain forecast today and in the early hours of tomorrow morning, WPBC have decided to cancel tomorrow’s tree planting because they fear it will be too slippery and dangerous to undertake the planting. Please let anyone you have told know of the change of plan.
The Rodwell Trail is a public highway that runs from Wyke Regis to the town centre of Weymouth in Dorset. The trail, opened in 2000, travels along the former route of the Weymouth and Portland Railway and is part of the South West Coast Path. The trail is estimated to be used by thousands of people, often as a means of avoiding traffic congestion in Weymouth.
At various points the Rodwell trail is situated upon earth embankments. In 2010, following heavy rainfall, a slippage occurred on one the embankment lengths adjacent to Castle Cove Sailing Club. Whilst this has not caused the trail to be closed there is a concern that it is now close to the trail and may cause problems in the near future. Since the land movement in 2010 WPBC have worked in partnership with the Castle Cove sailing club to develop and implement a suitable embankment stabilisation scheme.
In 2013 Weymouth and Portland Borough Council undertook a ground investigation study and an appraisal of various stabilisation measures.
Embankment Stabilisation Solution
Given the nature of the site, its use, degree of instability and range of costs involved, the optimum solution identified during the appraisal was to re-grade of embankment slope, remove the shrubs and replant with suitable tree species. This scheme will increase the stability of the embankment and reduce the rate of movement by removing water from the soil and providing a dense root network.
Works are provisionally programmed to start of Friday 11th April 2014.
Volunteers will be invited to assist with the tree planting activities on Saturday 26th April 2014 from 10:00 to 12:00
It is anticipated that the project will be complete by 1st May 2014.
